Sarnia, ON – The Sarnia Library is presenting a free science fiction film festival from Monday, July 27th to Wednesday, July 29th. The films start each night at 7:00 PM and are followed by an optional discussion immediately afterward at Ups and Downs pub. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13 because of intense violence and action, images of destruction, language, some drug use and brief nudity. Monday July 27, 2009 Escape from New York Directed by John Carpenter
Set in the distant future of 1997 where Manhattan has been turned into a giant prison and ex-Special Forces soldier Snake Plissken has 24 hours to rescue the President from the middle of it. Written as a response to Watergate it inspired the cyberpunk genre and the Metal Gear video game series. It stars Kurt Russell, Harry Dean Stanton, Isaac Hayes and Ernest Borgnine. This movie is rated Adult Accompaniment; persons under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesday July 28, 2009 The Day the Earth Stood Still Directed by Robert Wise
This is the 1951 version of the movie which tried to illustrate the fear and suspicion of the early days of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the West. Reflecting themes still relevant today, the film is best know for the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto" and its haunting score featuring the unique electronic instrument, the theremin. The film stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Sam Jaffe. This movie is rated Parental Guidance.
Wednesday July 29, 2009 Steam Boy Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo
A thirteen year old boy living in a steam punk version of Victorian Great Britain is given a new source of steam energy and must determine whether it will be used for peace or war. The movie is a detailed vision of an alternate history and ends in an exercise in well rendered kinetic action. It features the voices of Anna Paquin, Alfred Molina and Patrick Stewart. It is rated Parental Guidance and is not recommended for young children due to violence.
