Sarnia,
ON – To
commemorate the anniversary of the first manned landing on the moon, the Sarnia
Library will show the episode "Moon" from the BBC series "The
Planets," on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 7:30 PM in the Library Theatre. Admission is free.
"Moon"
describes
the major steps in the race to Moon between the Soviet Union and the United
States. This is done by using
original video, images and interviews with the people involved including
Harrison Schmidt the only geologist to walk on the Moon and Sergei Khrushchev,
son of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who tells that his father was prepared
to agree to do a joint Moon expedition with President Kennedy that was stymied
by the latter's assassination in 1963. It
then goes on to examine the results of the Moon's exploration and how they
changed society's conceptions about how the Moon came to be.
